TSR-CHRONICLE-1994 The First Suzuka NK4 Series Champion.

The Honda CB400 Super Four, whose production officially ended in October 2022, first appeared in 1992 during the peak of the naked bike boom. At the time, it was often said that, “You can never go wrong choosing a CB400SF,” and “It’s always the right choice.” That reputation came from how incredibly easy the bike was to ride. At the same time, it also earned high praise for its excellent cornering performance. The CB400SF became especially successful in the growing naked-bike racing scene, which was rapidly gaining popularity at circuits across Japan during that era.

Beginning in 1994, a new category called “NK4 (Naked 400)” was launched as the Suzuka NK4 Series alongside the Suzuka Sunday Road Race championship events. The series was planned by the “Suzuka Constructors Committee,” a group made up of 12 leading motorcycle constructors, in which the former Technical Sports — now TSR — played a central role. The concept behind the category was to create a racing environment based on equal conditions and low costs, while reflecting the opinions of a wide range of entrants rather than being controlled solely by manufacturers. At the same time, the participating constructors would develop and sell racing and aftermarket parts, allowing the series to generate profit and sustain the racing scene over the long term.

TSR entered this new category with the Honda CB400 Super Four and immediately demonstrated its strength by winning the opening three races of the season. The category also included a 4-hour endurance race, held as part of the famous Suzuka endurance week leading up to the prestigious Suzuka 8 Hours — at the time regarded as one of Japan’s premier motorcycle racing events thanks to its enormous popularity. During the two-week festival of racing and related events, both the Suzuka 4-Hour Endurance Race (then known as the SP4 Endurance) and the Naked 400 Suzuka 4-Hour Endurance Race (NK4 Endurance) were held as part of the first half of endurance week. TSR, acting both as an organizer and entrant, entered the event representing the Suzuka side with only one goal: victory. Unfortunately, despite securing pole position, the team was defeated by competitors from the Kanto region and finished 2nd — a frustrating “Pole to 2nd” result. Even so, TSR went on to claim the inaugural NK4 Series Championship title.
