F.C.C. TSR Honda France entered Round 3 of the 2024 FIM Endurance World Championship (EWC), the Suzuka 8 Hours, holding 26 championship points and sitting 10th in the overall standings after a difficult first half of the season. The team arrived at Suzuka aiming to improve its championship position.
Following the 24 Heures Motos in France and the 8 Hours of Spa Motos in Belgium, the Suzuka round is one of the most prestigious and demanding events of the season. Suzuka Circuit is known for being an extremely difficult and physically punishing track, while Japan’s intense summer heat and humidity make it one of the toughest races in endurance racing. In addition, many top domestic Japanese teams and riders compete with victory ambitions, making the level of competition exceptionally high.
Qualifying took place on Friday morning and early afternoon.
Because F.C.C. TSR Honda France was unable to participate in the pre-event test held at the end of June, this race week effectively became the shakedown for the team’s new Honda CBR1000RR-R. Across the two qualifying sessions, the three riders and the team worked together to steadily refine the setup while posting strong lap times.
Josh Hook recorded a 2:06.871, while Mike Di Meglio — returning after missing the Spa race through injury — posted a 2:07.529. Alan Techer added a 2:07.090, demonstrating that the new CBR1000RR-R was progressing well ahead of the race. The combined qualifying result placed the team 9th overall, earning qualification for the Top 10 Trial.
The Top 10 Trial determines the top ten positions on the starting grid using two riders from each team.
Techer was the first rider to take to the track, recording a provisional best lap of 2:06.836. Hook followed and, although he could not quite improve upon his earlier qualifying pace, completed his lap in 2:07.142.
As a result, F.C.C. TSR Honda France secured 8th position on the starting grid for the 2024 Suzuka 8 Hours, scheduled to begin at 11:30 AM local time on Sunday, July 21.
Josh Hook
We already knew that the bike did not yet have the performance needed to fight at the very front, so qualifying position itself was not the most important thing for us. That’s why I tried to avoid taking unnecessary risks. Even so, I’m satisfied that we managed to finish inside the top ten, and with our current bike setup and pace, I believe we can still achieve a good result in the race. Maybe we needed a little more time before the race weekend, but compared to Wednesday’s test, the bike’s performance improved significantly today, which makes me feel very positive.
Mike di Meglio
During qualifying, we were able to improve our lap times steadily across the two sessions. Then, in the Top 10 Trial, Alan Techer delivered an excellent lap time for the team. We knew we could push even harder, but our spare machine developed problems, leaving us with only one race-ready bike for the event. Because of that, avoiding mistakes became the top priority today. Under that kind of pressure, I really want to congratulate Alan for producing such a strong performance. Tomorrow is expected to be even hotter, so from now we need to start thinking carefully about how to manage the heat.
Alan Techer
Everything went well for us today. Our main target is the race itself, but I’m very happy to have achieved my first-ever 2:06 lap time. The most important thing today was to avoid crashing, because we only had one machine available to use. I think the team and my teammates have done an excellent job throughout the entire race week. Now, my focus is fully on the race.
